Where did the idea of “State of Flow” come from and who coined the phrase?

The theory behind the State of Flow has gain popularity and researchers have put investigating its effects into high gear. State of Flow affects every area of our life, from sports, learning, gaming, and everyday life activities that we perform to sustain a happy healthy life.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (Me-high Cheek-sent-me-high), is the researcher that coined the term ‘flow’. Csikszentmihalyi developed the flow concept back in the 1970s. I found it surprising that this concept was 50 years old. In short, Csikszentmihalyi found that those that experienced flow tended to describe it very much the same. Participants in his study used the descriptions of the feeling of timelessness, tasks seem easy, things just “come together”, experiences are enjoyable, and an overall feeling of positivity. These consistent descriptions came from participants from a wide variety of settings. Therefore, the task is not as important as the participant’s experience.

By the 1990s flow in sports was being researched. In the state of flow sport psychology, the concept of challenge-skill balance is one of the most important dimensions of flow. Moving beyond the average experience of a challenge and skill is necessary for flow to occur. When you push yourself you are investing mental energy into the task and therefore meeting the challenge with positivity and a sense of success. Your mind and body coordinate in such a way as to flow and your actions become clear and fluent. Often the actual level of skill needed to successfully complete the task seems to not have much bearing on flow but that the person is confident, focused, and completely engaged. Also, flow can occur whether the task is simple or extremely complex.

Think of an experience when you were so focused on an activity you enjoyed that you lost track of time. Within a few minutes, 15-20, completely immersing yourself in the activity. Once absorbed would you say that at least one or two of the descriptions above fit your experience? Studies show your answer would be yes if in the state of flow. You likely felt strong and confident about yourself.

Micro Flow and Macro Flow

Microflow would be what one might consider everyday life experiences. Macroflow would be experiences associated with more complex or higher levels and demands on the person. Therefore, in everyday life, the goal would be to achieve the State of Flow. We have all likely achieved the state of flow. The important fact is how to be consistent in achieving the State of Flow.

The goal would be to achieve the State of Flow regularly so that you live your best life. A clear mind, clear goals, and a clear path can be in your future. Clarity of purpose, staying fully connected to the task at hand, and being able to take in your surroundings and interpret them to continue in the correct direction to accomplish your goals.

What does it take to be in the State of Flow?

State of Flow sports psychology is when there is a balance between the challenges and skills that are real versus what is perceived. Coaches that are able to help their athletes, at all levels, achieve this balance propel them to greater success. The athlete maintains a strict lifestyle of diet, exercise, and mental health. It is maintenance for the body and if there is a break in the routine then the body simply doesn’t run at its optimum level. This type of routine is very difficult to maintain consistently, for the athlete, even more so for the average person working toward this goal.

Fuel the Brain – Fuel the Body

The brain is what runs your entire body, so let’s start with the brain. Focus on fueling the brain with the right ingredients is key to success. Your brain needs glucose. It fuels the brain so that you can coordinate actions and reactions in a fluent fashion that allows you to think and feel and, therefore process memories and emotions.

We eat carbohydrates and other foods that convert to glucose. The issue is that we are trying to fuel our brains with the wrong type and way too much glucose. This leads to a whole list of bad issues and what a neurologist refers to as a “Fat Head”!!!! I am afraid most of have been there, you know when you can’t remember why you walked into a room, where you laid your keys down, zero motivation . . .

So, eating the right diet along with moderate exercise is key. We will tackle the exercise in another article. We have heard, read, and been told about how to eat over and over. With so much conflicting information it can make your head spin. If you sift through it all there are a few key points that seem to keep surfacing. Eat as close to nature s possible, the largest variety possible, the cleanest variety possible, and exercise regularly. That is it in a nutshell. But what about fueling the brain specifically. Is that easy? What nutrients does it require? Fueling the brain correctly is key to the State of Flow.
