Red Wine and Heart Health

Red Wine and Heart Health connection is strong when consuming quality red wine in moderation. The key seems to be in the quality of the wine, that was quality not quantity! This connection has steadily become more established as more research has been conducted and studied. Case studies of the connections between red wine in moderation and heart health are increasing. It has been found that over many societies and generations it appears that alcohol and certain substances in red wine prevent coronary artery disease. Coronary artery disease is a condition that leads to heart attacks. Using this information alone relieves stress and pressure, which in itself is good heart health and add a glass of fine red wine is taking another step in a heart healthy direction.

Red Wine and Heart Health

Beneficial Ingredients in Red Wine

Part of the benefit is believed to be that antioxidants may increase levels of high-density lipoprotein (LDL-which is the “good” cholesterol). This LDL cholesterol protects against cholesterol buildup. Which is vital to heart health.

Antioxidants in red wine called polyphenols prove to help protect the lining of blood vessels in your heart.

The antioxidants such as flavonoids, or a substance known as resveratrol, are naturally occurring substances. They are praised for their antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective potential. The observation that heart disease is relatively low in France despite high levels of dietary saturated fat and smoking, leads scientists to connect the regular consumption of red wine in France and the low heart disease rates.

What is Resveratrol and its connection with Red Wine and Heart Health?

Red wine contains resveratrol. This discovery in 1992, lead scientists to explore resveratrol’s health benefits, connecting it to red wine. Resveratrol proves to help prevent damage to blood vessels, reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), and prevents blood clots. Some research shows that resveratrol is also linked to lower risks of inflammation and blood clotting. Which all leads to a lower risk of heart disease. But other studies found no benefits from resveratrol in preventing heart disease directly. Therefore, more research is needed to make a clear and direct connection to the resveratrol and heart health.

Grapes

Grapes produce large amounts of resveratrol in their skins. Consequently, grapes and the commercial products containing grapes, including grape juice and grape extracts, are significant sources of resveratrol. And of course, our favorite, red wine. Red wine contains a particularly high concentration of resveratrol over white wine because the grape skins are not removed in the red winemaking process.

As a side note, resveratrol is present not only in grapes but various berries, peanuts, and Japanese knotweed. Red wine is my favorite pick of the bunch!!!

Drink in moderation — or not at all

The heart healthy benefits look promising for red wine. Those who drink moderate amounts of alcohol, including red wine, seem to have a lower risk of heart disease.

So, enjoying a glass of red wine with your evening meal is healthy, but if you drink a gallon of red wine with a meal, that is not!!! Therefore, some doctors are wary of encouraging anyone to start drinking wine. Especially if there is a family history of alcohol abuse. Too much alcohol can have many harmful effects not only physically but in all areas of your life.

Considering that, there are many doctors that agree that something in red wine and heart health goes hand in hand. It is agreed that the antioxidants, such as flavonoids or a substance called resveratrol, have heart-healthy benefits.

Red wine really seems to have heart-healthy benefits. Although, it is possible that white wine and heart health also has a connection. But what is clear is that what is healthy in red wine is the antioxidants, therefore, choosing red wine is a smart choice.

How does alcohol help the heart?

Various studies have shown that moderate amounts of all types of alcohol benefit your heart, not just alcohol found in red wine. Some research points to alcohol raising HDL. HDL is the healthy cholesterol. It also helps prevent artery damage caused by an increased level of LDL, the bad cholesterol. Reduces the formation of blood clots and may improve the function of the layer of cells that line your blood vessels.
