Monthly Clubs are all the rage right now and I believe their popularity is just beginning. I am located in the United States where, because of prohibition, a generation or so of refining our knowledge and our palates for wine has been lost. After researching and investigating the various wine clubs I have discovered that there are some really big differences. Wine clubs can be an investment, therefore, choosing the right club is important for you to be happy with your decision and to continue in the club. Here you will find the top five clubs that I chose to compare.
Wine Clubs
Wine is about fragrance, taste, relaxation, being social and for some, even traveling the world.
Most of us are just starting out on this adventure and are often frozen in our tracks when we enter the wine department at the local liquor store. What to choose and what should that bottle of wine really cost? But as you progress in your knowlege and spend a little more money on a bottle of wine, you will quickly become quite aware of the difference between a bottle of wine amongst the hundreds on the grocery store shelf and a bottle of hand selected premium fine wine. Keep that in mind when you look over these comparisons.
Comparing 5 Wine Clubs
I have chosen five to compare, of course there are many more than that but these five are a little higher-end than a $7 bottle of wine. What is the fun of that when you can walk into any grocery store and choose that so let us aim a little higher and start with wine clubs that offer the discounted price of at least $12.00. It may not be defined as a fine wine but it is a good starting place.
5) The California Wine Club
Price Range: 2 bottles from $40.45 to $231.00, plus shipping cost, there are 5 membership options available
Best For: Premium wines from smaller wineries.
Bottles per Shipment: 2,3 or 4, option to order more if desired
Negative seems to be the that the wine does come from a varies of regions around the world but always the same wineries. There doesn’t seem to be a constant search for new premium wineries. Positive is that these are premium wines that are sure to satisfy the refined pallet.
4) Winc
Price Range: from $13 per bottle, plus shipping cost
Best For: Learning about new wines and sampling fun new wines each month for an easy price.
Bottles per Shipment: 3-6, with an option to order more if desired.
Negative to me is that I did not find on their website that any of their wines were classified as premium or fine wines. Actually, their website was not very informative, therefore, a beginner may not fair well with this choice. Indeed, there is a positive is that as you order more monthly shipments and comment each month on your tastes you should get more wine to your liking as shipments progress. The wine comes from varies regions of the world.
3) Wine of the Month Club
Price Range: Monthly Membership starting at $25 – $80 for 2 bottles – 6 and 12 bottle memberships available for as low as $90 – plus shipping cost
Best For: This club has been around since 1972.
Bottles per Shipment: 2,6 or 12
The only negative that there seems to be is that a single person selects the wine for you. The positive is satisfaction is guaranteed, so maybe it is not a negative that they choose your wine for you. The wine comes from varies regions of the world depending on the monthly subscription you join.
2) Bright Cellars
Price Range: only on $20 a bottle at 4 bottles a month + $8 shipping costs
Best For: Easy pricing structure.
Bottles per Shipment: 4
Negatives: There is not an a la carte option for purchasing single bottles, plus only one membership option. Also, they are not classifying their wines as premium or fine. Therefore they seem to be limited in their memberships and wine selections. Positive is that the wine comes from varies regions of the world.
1) DTC Ambassador
Price Range: from $99.95 per 4 bottles, plus shipping cost, as customers, there is also an option to join as a Wine Ambassador, which is worth some investigation, there is a way to get free fine wine!
Best For: Learning about incredible fine wines, where they come from and what foods they pair best with. These wines are exclusive and the quality is premium. This is a Direct to Consumer wine, therefore, 5 markups are avoided. This gives you $100 plus quality wine in each bottle!!!!
Bottles per Shipment: 4 with an option to order more
The only negative that there seems to be is that they select the wine for you. The positive is that it is premium wine and 100% satisfaction is guaranteed, so maybe it is not a negative that they choose your wine for you. They will replace any wine you do not like. This club crafts its very own exclusive premium wines from the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, which is where many of the best grapes and wine crafters in the world reside. No overruns, overstock, or unpopular wines in this club.
What Club Did We Choose?
My husband and I decided to join the DTC Ambassador Wine Club. We are pretty much beginners, but we were looking for a premium wine club to join. The customer service was what we were looking for. The pricing was right for premium wine, therefore, after joining this club we are delighted to find that the wines are excellent AND there are some financial benefits that are worth investigating. The tasting cards that come with each wine are a fabulous addition to the shipment and because of this we truly do enjoy our fine wine on a level we were not familiar with before. There is such an unbelievable difference in these wines compared to what we had experienced in the liquor department.
